Early Spring Garden Walkabout at Reeves-Reed Arboretum

A dress rehearsal for High Spring is underway. Although the calendar may still say Winter, many plants, trees, and shrubs have begun stirring in preparation for the season of rebirth that is upon us here at Reeves-Reed Arboretum! John Beirne, Curatorial Director of Horticulture, will guide us on a walkabout throughout the gardens and woodland to peek at the season’s prime harbingers.

We will look at some of spring's earliest blooming bulbs and ephemerals, notice the many swelling buds on our most precocious spring-blooming trees and shrubs, and hopefully spy on some of our hardiest spring insect pollinators.

The lengthening days, strengthening sun, and climbing temperatures signal our most intrepid garden denizens to begin waking up and getting back to business.

Let’s celebrate spring’s triumphant return! We will be walking on woodland trails and garden pathways that may be wet. Wearing durable, strong, supportive boots is recommended along with leg-covering jeans or pants. Dress comfortably for the ambient weather and bring a rain jacket because—just like our plants—we will be in the garden rain or shine.
