Join Halyna Lojko and the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (Branch 98) to learn how to make traditional pysanky. Wondering what that is? Here's a little history:

Thousands of years ago, the ancients decorated eggs to celebrate the coming of spring and new life, releasing the earth from the darkness of winter. With the coming of Christianity in Ukraine, those pagan rituals and symbolism took on the Christian meaning of the Resurrection, new life. Their motifs and the technique, similar to batik (wax resist) have been handed down over the ages and are still used today. Designs and motifs are written on the egg with a stylus applying hot bees wax, thus sealing the design on the surface of the egg. The egg is dipped in a series of dye baths, and on each subsequent color, designs are written and sealed in bees wax. At the end the wax is melted away to reveal the jewel that is a cherished pysanka!

The Pysanka is a treasured gift at Easter. Pysanky beautify the basket of traditional Easter foods taken to church to be blessed for Easter breakfast.
