June 7, 2024
Ocean County is host to an array of plants with unique adaptations that allow them to thrive in the harsh and dynamic conditions of our dry Pine Barrens and wet boggy fer. We will visit the Pygmy Pine Forest in Warren Grove to see a vast stand of Pitch Pines, and understand the conditions that have led to their stunted growth. We will also stop at a variety of wet, boggy areas to look at the carnivorous pitcher plants, sundews and other wildflowers that thrive in wet, muddy conditions. Dress for the weather; bring your binoculars/camera, sunscreen, insect repellent, hat and lunch. Be prepared to walk on uneven ground and sand. Your feet may get wet; wear appropriate footwear.
